Yarn Along

It is Wednesday and I am joining Small Things in her weekly yarn along.  Why?  Cause I have committed myself to knitting all of my Christmas presents this year, minus a few other handmade items and some toys like the Millennium Falcon Lego set, for um…my son…not um…for me…at all.

Stop laughing.  I can hear you.

I have knitted exactly 2 things successfully in the past.  And I have knitted a few not so successful crooked scarfs.  And I have showed the terrible ones to you.  I really, really am wanting to learn how to knit hats too, a few different colored beanies for the winter.  After all, I don’t like to wear coats, so a vest with a hat should cover me!

Anyway, here is my project for this week, a shawl I started a couple months ago for my daughter, but I had just finished two back to back for gifts and then my son got his concussion and the summer got away from me.  She is still waiting for it, and I am only going to work on it at night so she doesn’t think she is getting it any time soon.  I want Christmas to be a bit more homemade than it was last year.

Good for you, Jen! Might I suggest you look into knitting some fingerless gloves, or wrist-warmers, for some of the women on your list? I knit a pair and it was a rectangle that you then sew together, leaving a hole for the thumb. I used variegated yarn and it knitted up in stripes, came out looking really great, and was very quick and simple to knit. I am hoping to make many pairs this Christmas, as I share your vision of a more homemade holiday. Good luck with all the projects! I love the color of Sedona’s shawl!
    Miss you, xoxo.
ps- we’ll be in CO Sept. 21st for a week, will you guys be around?

heck YES! we will be here! I will put it on the calendar today! I REALLY would love to knit those too! I am a knitting work in progress, but I am willing to learn. I had forgotten you could knit those. I am so glad to hear you are coming out, you made my day!

Haha, you must live somewhere warmer than me – here a coat is not optional! The accessories are the most fun, though! That yarn looks so happy – all bright and sparkly and bubblegummy…mmm.

There are tons of things you can knit and I have been knitting for years….well decades. I cannot imagine life without it :) Good luck with your knitting adventures.

lol…i don’t know, most people wear coats here in the winter. i just don’t like feeling like the michelin man all winter. so i wing it with fleece vests and sweatshirts! i may just be crazy.

You can do it! I strive to make as many as possible each year. You just have to be diligent about starting really early.

I really admire that you’re trying to do more handmade for Christmas. You’re smart to start early. I would be in my glory here if I could make it through the winter with just a vest and hat. :) I can’t wait to see how your daughter’s shawl comes out. It’s a beautiful color!

I LOVE the color you’ve chosen for your daughter’s shawl. Perfect for a girl!

Knitting gifts for Christmas is so much fun, but I never finish all that I think I will.

I made my mother-in-law a shawl for Christmas last year and it was her favorite gift. She even bought a dress just to match it.

@Angela, really, it gets cold here, i live in CO! but i really don’t like big heavy coats. people think i am crazy. but really, most of the time in the winter i am going from the car, inside, to the car, and back home or something! i will don the heavy coat and snow pants to take the kids sledding!

@Lydia, thanks for the heads up. I probably will be the same, unable to get them ALL done! That is awesome that your MIL bought a dress to match! My MIL is a champion knitter…I cannot compete there! lol!
