New Knitting Project

It is Wednesday again, I am not sure I like being this clear about how fast my weeks fly by.  Nevertheless, here we are yet again with Small Things and the yarn along delight of seeing so many amazing projects.

Dare I say it?

Out loud?

I am not sure I should…

I am trying something on double ended needles.

I am serious.

Last week at this time, I had just finished my first ever knitted hat.  I didn’t know what I would do next, should I practice the hat again before moving on?  Or should I dive into something else?  What was a gal to do?

Find inspiration.

Which is exactly what I got last week perusing all the projects until I was reminded about fingerless gloves.  I have been dying for some, and wanting to learn to make them, but trying to work my way up slowly through knitting endeavors so I don’t get in over my head.  I found this seemingly easier pattern at A Friend To Knit With which I fell in love with right away.  I want to try both patterns.

I am new to double ended needle knitting, duh, so I needed a little You Tube love to get started.  Of all the videos I found, this one seemed the easiest to see what she is doing and also made the most sense to me and my logical brain.

And here is my current project:

knitting fingerless gloves

Needless to say, not much reading happened this week so the books are still the same.  But I am just super excited that I started this glove yesterday morning and it feels like I have made a surprising amount of progress.  Hopefully next week I will have at least one of them done, I still don’t know what “Knit 4, slip next 4 stitches to a piece of waste yarn, CO 4 stitches using the bakward loop method, knit to end” means, but I am willing to bet I will figure it out when I need to.

Yeah!  I finally feel like I am making some knitting progress and moving up the challenge ladder.  Before you know it I will be on to sweaters.  O.k. maybe not, but still, FINGERLESS GLOVES!

What are you challenging yourself with this week?  On the needles or off?  In the pages of a book? Or not?

Fingerless gloves are always a fun knit!! So are sweaters but they take forever ;)

  2. Natalie (pinkundine) Says:

Go you! Knitting with DPNs looks crazy hard, but once you get used to wrangling the octopus it’s actually easier than you think (plus, non-knitters look at you like you’re a ninja!)

  3. lily Says:

Welcome to the world of dpns…….you’ll be onto socks next, best of luck with the mittens.

  4. Kylie Says:

I love knitting with DPNs…and I agree with Natalie (pinkundine) about people thinking you’re a Ninja ;) Have fun with the fingerless gloves!

  5. Tracey Says:

There will be no stopping you now! DPN’s areN’T hard, it’s just what you get use to. Can’t wait to see all the lovely knits that come off your needles.
    Happy Yarn Along!

    *shudders* @ DPN’s
I can knit with DPN’s but get really annoyed with them, so it’s ciculars all the way with me and magic loop for when there aren’t many stitches.

Mittens are a great project on them though and look good so far, socks next?

  7. Ellen Says:

Good for you! Dpns are scary at first, but after you attempt them, they’re really not too bad. I really like dpns now.

  8. Joy Says:

Great color for fingerless gloves. Those will be nice. :)

  9. Angela Says:

Oh wow fingerless gloves. I have yet to knit a pair, but I have plans to make some for gifts. I do enjoy dpns. A whole new world is open to you now. Have a great time knitting. And yes the days just streak by!

oh so wonderful, good for you! it does look like you’ve gotten the hang of it already! if you get a chance you might try wood or bamboo needles, they make it easier.

when you get to the part where you knit four, you’ll just get a piece of waste yarn and thread it to a yarn needle. then slip the next four stitches on the waste yarn (using the needle). then take the needle off and the four stitches will be on hold. then on your right needle, you’ll make a loop, and slip it on the needle, four times. when you come back to knit these fake cast on stitches, they will be really loose, but don’t worry, just try to snug each one up and on sucessive rows you won’t notice! i hope i haven’t confused you! you can do it!

Oh, have fun! I love double-pointed-needle knitting. It’s so versatile.

  12. The Barefoot Crofter Says:

You are now a knitting goddess – officialy! I am of the – dive into something else school. You can do hats now. I only learnt to crochet (from you tube) so that i could do the ripple blanket.
Oh – dpns are easier for bedtime knitting. x

thanks for the lesson lori! i *hope* i will be able to pull it off!

    :)

I thought DPN’s would be impossible to learn but once I actually tried it I realized how easy it is and how many projects were now available to me. So happy for you that you tried it too. I agree with Lori, bamboo needles make it easy. thanks for sharing. Tricia crunchycatholicmomma.blogspot

DPN’s can be dauting. All those needles are a little scary–at first! But the first time you finish a project and don’t have to seam it YOU will love knitting in the round! I sure do wish I lived closer to you– check out knittinghelp.com for more videos!

  16. Emily@theNest Says:

Thank you for your comment, I’m so thrilled to have fund you- I completely GET what you said about not being exactly clear about how fast your weeks are flying by- a downside to routine!! I take my hat off to you with your DPNs!! And I LOVE the Byron Katie book- another video actually you should check out on Youtube- some great Byron Katie ones there too!

  17. Debby Says:

Youtube tutorials are so useful, that’s how I progressed from Dpn’s to circular pins and to make an i-cord…

I challenged myself this week by using circular needles to make some mittens…the first one was a bit of a struggle but it was so much easier once I started the second…

  18. Allison Says:

Double pointed needles can be slow, but they really aren’t that bad once you get used to them. The best part about knitting is that it really is one stitch at a time. As long as you follow a pattern, you should be all set:)

  19. jenparsons Says:

thanks to all of you for stopping by! you each give me so much to aspire to each week!

    :)

  20. cpcable Says:

You can do it! I found DPNs to be VERY intimidating. But, like so many things, you just have to dig in. I can’t wait to see you model your fingerless gloves!

  21. Jen Says:

Good for you! I wish you the best of luck on your fingerless gloves.

  22. Ann Says:

I had no idea those existed…wow! Happy knitting!
